On Country/In Residence Day 03

A day of intense weather. So we did less walking than planned but this allowed for some potent collective reflection and visioning towards the next stage of the project. We ventured through the rain to Sherbrooke Falls, coming across a calamitous scene of recently fallen Mountain Ash trees on the way. The memory of the destructive 2021 storm was present for those of us who had witnessed it, when over twenty per cent of the trees of the Dandenongs were felled by the sheer force of the wind. A reminder of the local effects of climate change. At the waterfall, Aarti led a listening and vocal activity.

As the impending storm grew more ominous we headed to Burrinja Cultural Centre where Laki invited us to consider how we frame a place - what do we leave in and what do we choose to exclude? We workshopped a title for our forthcoming exhibition (watch this space!) Then Aarti offered one last activity - an expansion from the waterfall voice experience, that evolved as a beautiful final ritual in the Burrinja gallery where we will exhibit next year.

Listening and vocalising practices amongst the rain and gushing waterfall. The vocal practice aimed to warm the internal body and introduce toning with each other and the surrounding "natural" sounds. Later in the gallery we recreated the waterfall scene by imagining the experience, recalling the track pathway with our bodies and reflecting Sherbrooke forest environment through our voices.
